The Boulders Golf Resort
The Boulders Golf Resort is a wonderful golf course in a wonderful location. It is tucked back about a mile from Scottsdale Road and provides a nice quiet golf experience. The staff is friendly and helpful, the course conditions are fantastic, and the practice facility is very accommodating. When you get out on the golf course you see why this is one of the top golf resorts in Arizona. The golf course has plenty of character while being challenging but fair. The first hole is a dogleg left Par 5. The fairway ends at about 300 yards from the tee so the big hitters need to lay up. Luckily for me, the day I played The Boulders I didnt bring my "A game" so I could hit driver and still be alright. I decided to go for the green in two with a 2-iron from the rough and hit it well but ended up in a tough greenside bunker with a long bunker shot. I left my first one in the bunker and failed to get up and down from my next shot and started my round with a bogey. Luckily I made up for it quickly on the second hole, which is a tough long Par 3, by sticking my 3-iron to about 4 feet and putting the putt in the center of the cup. Even par after two holes I thought, "This course is easy."
As I got further into my round I discovered my previous assessment might have been wrong. Boulders Golf Course has trouble on both sides of every hole and plenty of large greenside bunkers to catch wayward iron shots. Considering that both my tee shots and approach shots were wayward that day, I was in for a tough round. Very few holes at The Boulders are straight. Almost every hole has a little bend left or right. There are a few large boulders that are placed in fairways that give the course character and also extra obstacles to avoid off the tee.
My round consisted of a lot of tee shots pushed right into the hazard area and a lot of lipped out putts for par. I did manage to make a couple birdies by putting my long irons close to the hole on the par 3's and tapping in, but that was about the biggest highlight of my golf game that day. I played so badly I didn't even keep score! But even with all those bad shots I had a magnificent time out on a fabulous golf course. Whether you are playing well or playing poorly, The Boulders Golf Course is an immensely enjoyable experience for golfers of all skill levels. And to top the day off make sure you try the Steak Sandwich from the grill; you wont be disappointed!
